How is the Error Value of a Blood Glucose Meter Calculated?

The national standard for home blood glucose meters stipulates that 95% of test results should be within an error range of 20%. The formula for calculating the error value is (Blood Glucose Meter Reading - Laboratory Biochemical Test Result) / Laboratory Biochemical Test Result.

For example: If the blood glucose meter reading is 7 and the hospital’s laboratory biochemical test result is 8, the error value = (7 - 8) / 8. The error result shows that the meter reading is 12.5% lower than the biochemical test result.

How can I verify the accuracy of the meter and calibrate it?

You can compare the results from your blood glucose meter with those from a laboratory biochemical test at a hospital.
The correct method for comparison is as follows: Bring your blood glucose meter to the hospital and perform the tests simultaneously. First, use the meter to test your finger-prick blood, and then immediately have venous blood drawn at the hospital. This approach avoids stress-induced elevation of peripheral blood glucose due to pain and ensures the tests are conducted at the same time.

Notes:
1.If there is a significant temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments, allow the meter to acclimate to room temperature for at least 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital. In winter, you can keep the meter in an inner pocket of your clothing or in a temperature-controlled room (with heating).
2.Ensure the tests are conducted simultaneously (i.e., bring the meter to the hospital for synchronous testing).
3.Never apply venous blood collected at the hospital directly to a home blood glucose meter for testing.

Frequency of Blood Glucose Monitoring

Substantial research has proven that maintaining blood glucose within the target range can reduce the risk of complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and other organs.

The frequency of blood glucose testing should be determined together by you and your healthcare provider, based on factors such as your age, type of diabetes, medications, and the presence of other medical conditions. Monitoring should be performed promptly in the following situations: any physical or emotional changes, before or after trying new diets or exercise, during travel, when adjusting insulin dosage, when symptoms of hypoglycemia occur, during pregnancy, or when planning a pregnancy.

If blood glucose levels are not well controlled, it is recommended to test at the following times: before and after each of the three main meals, and at bedtime. If necessary, additional testing at 1 a.m. or 3 a.m. may be advised.
